Thailand: Week 05 - Teaser

Posted by Isaac on Thursday, October 6, 2022

Once again, I’ve collected a trove of stories this week. For starters, the nightly heavy rain has caused the river in the village to flood. I was told that this is only the second time that it has ever been this bad. The river is directly in front of our main gate and I can even hear the water roaring from my bedroom. Everyone is a little worried about the flooding getting worse, but there’s a plan in place to deal with it.

On a more positive note, I had an opportunity to go visit one of the TBA’s gardens. They are planting the garden full with andrographis paniculata (green chiretta). This is an herb that Thailand’s health ministry has approved to help combat the early stages of Covid-19. I’m not going to comment on its efficacy, but I did have a lot of fun prepping the seedlings. Oh, and did I mention that I also had to work in the garden barefoot?

When I haven’t been busy adventuring out in nature, I’ve been either writing lesson plans or teaching English. My classes are quickly gaining in popularity and I’m starting to get more comfortable around the kids. I quickly learned the power of a candy incentive and learned my lesson about writing too small (or illegibly) on the board.

All in all, it has been a very interesting week and I’m excited to share all the details with you in the upcoming weekly report.
